The History of the Middle Finger

The History of the Middle Finger

Well, now……here’s something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified.  Isn’t history more fun when you know something about it?

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as “plucking the yew” (or “pluck yew”).

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew!  Since ‘pluck yew’ is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F’, and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute!  It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as “giving the bird.”

IT IS STILL AN APPROPRIATE SALUTE TO THE FRENCH TODAY!

And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing

Quote of the Day!

“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Yes, I know I have something in my hair!!

I went to the salon on Tuesday and got my hair cut and colored so I’d be all pretty for my vacation next week.  Well, it just so happens to be BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH and my salon is raising money.  If you donated, you could put a little pink ribbon up on the wall saying whatever you wanted and they would also put a little pink extension in your hair.  I thought it was a cute idea, and more importantly it supports a very worthy cause.  So, I’ve been walking around with a pink stripe in my hair all week to help raise awarness.

Ladies, please remember to get your exams!!!

Joke of the Day!

A professor at the University of Alabama  was giving a lecture on the supernatural. To get a feel for his audience, he asks, ‘How many
people  here believe in ghosts?’

About 90 students raise theirhands.
‘Well, that’s a good start. Out of those of you who believe in  ghosts, do any of you think you have seen a ghost?’
About 40 students  raise their hands.
‘That’s really good. I’m really glad you take this seriously. Has anyone here ever talked to a ghost?’
About 15 students  raise their hand.
’Has anyone here ever touched a ghost?’
 Three  students raise their hands.
‘That’s fantastic. Now let me ask you one
question further. Have any of you ever made love to a ghost?’

Way in the  back, Bubba raises his hand.
The professor takes off his glasses, and
says ‘Son, all the years I’ve been giving this lecture, no one has ever claimed  to have made love to a ghost. You’ve got to come up here and tell us about your experience.’

The big redneck student replied with a nod and a grin, and  began to make his way up to the podium. When he reached the front of the room,  the Professor asks, ‘So, Bubba, tell us what it’s like to have
sex with a ghost?’

Bubba replied, “Awe Shit!! From way back there I thought you said Goat.”

Punctuation

I just read an email I sent and I realized that I over punctuate.  A LOT!  I think the comma is my favorite punctuation.  I think I need to work on that.

Look inside yourself…

A man distraught by all the pain and suffering he saw all around him broke down and banged his fists into the dirt. His head turns upward and he yells at his God. “Look at this mess. Look at all this pain and suffering. Look at all this killing and hate. God. Oh God! WHY DON’T YOU DO SOMETHING!!” And his God spoke to him and said “I did. I sent you.”

Quite often I hear people saying how they don’t believe in God.  How could God allow such horrible things to happen to people?

Instead of blaming God for our short comings and asking him to fix everything, why don’t we open up our eyes and realize he already has.  He has given us everything we need to make things happen.  He’s given us the gift of free will.  We have more power than we give ourselves credit for.  We have the tools, it’s up to us to make a difference.

Meth…

“It’s the devil’s drug and once meth has your soul, it’s a bitter fight to get it back.”

This week I am heart broken.  I’ve been debating on whether or not to write about this, and I think it’s just something that I have to do.

I myself have suffered through, and overcome, an addiction to this vile drug.  Right now one of the people that I hold nearest and dearest to my heart is struggling to overcome it as well.  My heart goes out to them and their family.  In the past I blamed myself for this, but blaming doesn’t change the way things are.  I will not name names, that doesn’t help this person’s fight.  What I will do is ask you to take a second and pray for strength for them.  It’s a hard long road ahead, but I have faith.  I have to believe in my heart that they will come through this whole ordeal a better person.

The reason I decided to write about this is an email I got from my Aunt today.  It’s about this project that was started in Montana called The Meth Project.  The statistics on the website state that usage has dropped dramatically.  There has been a 50% decrease in teen usage and a 70% decrease in use by adults.  Do you realize how HUGE that is?  How amazing and wonderful that is?  The project is now going national and I think it’s wonderful.  If people were better educated about the effects that this drug has on people, and how addicting it is (more so than heroin) maybe, just maybe people wouldn’t have an interest in trying it.

Before I start rambling on, I’m going to end there…but check out the website.  It’s really an eye opener.

That would be the number of shots I just got in my head.  Owwwie!!  Thank goodness that’s over and done with.  The doctor also removed a mole.  All in all, it wasn’t a fun doctor’s visit.  However, my doctor is a real cutie, not to mention just an all around neat-o guy so he tends to make it as pleasant as possible.

As far as the whole colonic thing goes…I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.  It wasn’t a bad experience or anything really, just not worth it to me.  I guess if someone was really clogged up or a doctor recommended it, then sure, get one.  For me personally though, I don’t see what all the hype was about.  I had nothing to remove and it was a waste of my time (and money) I felt.
